Multimedia Collections

The Multimedia Collections are one of Austria’s most significant audio-visual collections. With more than two million photos, sound and film recordings they document Styria and its inhabitants on their way into the digital age. At their new location in the Joanneum Quarter, the Multimedia Collections will not only be present in exhibition projects by, about and with Styrians, they will also offer the opportunity for individual engagement with possibly undiscovered topics and stimulate research about written and oral history. Images and recordings open up different perspectives on thinking about the past and represent in their totality a multifaceted, audio-visual compendium of memories, including personal “mementos” as well as official documents. Like in a laboratory, the Multimedia Collections offers the possibility to work with these holdings, both in private browsing as well as scientific research. An important task of the Multimedia Collections is the long-term archiving of historical documents in order to conserve and make them accessible for future generations.
