Natural History Museum
From March 2013 the new Natural History Museum invites you on a journey of discovery through 400 million years of Styrian geological history.
The Museum makes the diversity of rocks easy to grasp and includes exhibits of fossil coral reefs, Ice-age cave bears and the volcanoes of Styria. It shows the amazing biodiversity right on our doorstep, gives insights into the fascinating evolution of life, and looks for Styrian treasures of flora and fauna. In this way miniscule micro-fossils encounter giant mammoth-like mammals and glistening gems meet meteorites, the rocky messengers from the darkness of space. The exhibition of treasures of Styrian crystal includes giant quartz crystals and mineral forms that are not found anywhere else in the world. The international minerals collection is exhibited in its original cabinets from the 19th century and responds to questions about classification and order in the mineral realm. Brilliant colors, different forms and manifold patterns can be found in butterflies, shells and snails. The development of life-forms, the gigantic achievements of the insect realm and the different types of locomotion of animals and flowers (yes, plants move as well!) will fascinate the museum visitor, as will the birds that draw interest not only with their colorful coats and breakneck flying skills but as well with their various ways of communicating. In the permanent exhibition and in changing special exhibitions, we will present special topics in natural science, pose questions and often give surprising answers, take up positions on controversial problems and encourage involvement with the rich diversity of nature!
You can find further information on the website of the Natural History Museum.
The natural science exhibition collections are currently closed because of refurbishment and will be reopened in 2013 as the Natural History Museum in the Joanneum Quarter.
