Bringing art into society and connecting it to everyday life lie at the centre of Michelangelo Pistoletto’s work. The Neue Galerie Graz dedicates a review to the outstanding exponent of Arte Povera, of painting, conceptual and object art, as well as performance art, with special attention given to the artist’s earlier positions. Pistoletto won worldwide recognition with his self-portraits, the iconic mirror works and minus objects – a blow for freedom in the art system of the 1960s. Besides self-representation and reflection, participation is a key concept in Pistoletto’s work. Hence in 1998 he founded the Cittadellarte, a trans-disciplinary network, together with which the Kunsthaus Graz will mount an exhibition as part of the steirischer herbst.
