Styrian State Library

The collection of the Styrian State Library offers a broad spectrum of knowledge, from stories and history reflecting the unique profile of Styria, to daily newspapers and regional media often ranging from their current issue to their beginnings 400 years ago, to children’s literature and literature for young people, as well as expertise for school projects and scientific research. The library contains a great diversity of reading material, including novels or non-fiction books, many in foreign languages such as English or French, but also Hungarian or Slovenian. Big names and anonymous polemical pamphlets, bibliophile curiosities and current reference books can all be found here: A Turkish newspaper from 1593 and first editions of Peter Rosegger, Peter Handke or Elfriede Jelinek, atlases, books on herbs, the latest school textbooks, precious collections of theater programs and Ex Libris as well as many other jewels from different centuries. The collection contains 700,000 books and magazines, as well as a digital archive of newspapers containing all regional editions and their mutations since 2005. In addition, there are special collections of works - be it books or multimedia - by Styrian authors about Styrian topics. A team of skilled librarians is ready to offer visitors interested in reading or research orientation in Austria’s largest State Library. With the opening of the Joanneum Quarter in November 2011, the Styrian State Library will be presented in a new shape, with a new appearance and expanded offerings, but with its accustomed diligence, ready for the challenges presented by the information society of the 21st century.

More than 30,000 volumes are available to the public from November 26, 2011 in the new open access library, as well as its technical facilities (Internet workstations, microfilm readers and copy services) and a large number of reference books.

The relocation of around 700,000 volumes and all the special collections from their temporary depots presents a great logistical challenge and is completed on the July 2, 2012 in time for the opening of the entirely renovated library building in Kalchberggasse.
